At Stanford University, I was walking across the campus having a look around and I came upon this cement curb, which ran perpendicular across the sidewalk.

Curb running through a sidewalk

Naturally, I wondered to myself … why would anyone put a curb across the sidewalk?  Luckily for me, some smart civil engineer anticipated my curiosity and printed the reason right there on the curb.

How deep was the barrier? Flush would certainly not be effective on the surface, but if it went down a foot that might help.

On the sides you can see it goes a couple of inches, but I am not sure how much deeper. I didn’t have my trusty shovel with me that day to dig it out. I guess it would have to be fairly deep to be of any use though.
