The steps of erudition

Guest Post, Places, Signs

Guess what, chickenmonkeydogians (tip hat to Reader Steve)? We’ve a guest post today. Yeah! Happy Friday to us all.

Today’s photo-post came to us from a Milwaukee reader who captured a curious sign in South Bend, Indiana:

Sign reading 'Please be cautious stairway'

So, the question is, how could a stairway know to be cautious in the area of that sign since stairways can’t read?!? Ha-ha.

Or was the sign cautioning the readers to be a “cautious stairway”, along the lines of similar signs asking readers to “Please be quiet”?

Interestingly, there were quite a few of these types of signs around — a few with different wording, but the same idea. Curious…no doubt!

    @ Meaghan –

    Around where?

    @ Conall -

Asking someone to be quiet is humanly possible. I’ve yet to meet anybody that can change themselves into a stairway upon command.

It would be tough, hence the need for caution, but I bet you could think of a way to make yourself “step-like” in order for people to ascend or descend from some height. Also, does it seem more “possible” for a stairway to be cautious than it is for a human to be a stairway?

The other signs were posted in the same restaurant I snapped that picture at. They have similar wording — but that was the most direct statement.
