As I drove down the highway the other day I cruised past a bit of debris in the roadway. It was a plastic bag, blowing around in the wind and dodging between, under and around vehicles as they sped past.

Passing the floating plastic bag myself I pondered, as I saw it still roaming the roadway in my rear-view mirror:

This is possibly the only time when I am slightly happy upon seeing a plastic bag polluting nature.

Of course I am not happy BECAUSE the plastic bag has been carelessly disposed of, but rather IN SPITE OF that fact. I am happy because it is not hooked on my car.

Does anyone else give the rear-view mirror a quick glance after passing trash in their lane of traffic to make sure the trash didn’t get caught on their car?

Observation #1: I was driving the other day through Ann Arbor, MI, when I seemed to get stuck at every red light in town. Around rush hour, it’s a nightmare to drive, not because of the huge numbers of cars, but because of always seeming to get caught by a red light.

Observation #2: I was walking the other day through Ann Arbor, MI, when I seemed to get greeted by every walk signal in town. In the morning, it’s heavenly to walk, not because of the few people on the sidewalks, but because of always seeming to be greeted with a walk signal.

Conclusion: Ann Arbor, MI, in its undeniable quirkiness, has timed its traffic lights to the speed of pedestrian traffic rather than automobile traffic.

Fascinating. A new way to encourage people to walk?

On a drive across the country last week I stopped off at a gas-station to fuel my car and eat some lunch. Along with my sandwich and fries, I ordered a MEDIUM Coke. Medium, it turns out, is still a whole lot of soda.

The cup is twice as tall as my palm.

There was no estimate of the fluid ounces in the cup, but my thirst was definitely more than quenched.

I think I would have enjoyed that much to drink if it was water or juice, or if I didn’t have to get back in the driver’s seat for a few more hours. In the moment though it sure seemed like a massive portion of Coke, especially since the drink was just a “medium”. It turns out that fast food also equals a lot of food.

I like to travel light, so I only had one big bag and one small bag. It took hours of arranging, squeezing and cajoling to pack everything into these two bags. I even had to ask my friend to lend me a hand to close the zipper.

And at the end of it all, what do I discover?

I’d left one of the outside pockets completely empty! Oh the joys of packing. Wah-wah-wah.
