Amateur astronomers beware!
Posted 31 Dec 2008
As a public service announcement to any budding amateur astronomers who read chickenmonkeydog, please be careful:

The warning reads:
WARNING! Do not look at the Sun through this telescope. Concentrated sunlight may cause serious eye injury. Children should use only with adult supervision.
While it may be common knowledge that it can harm one’s eyes to stare directly into the sun, it is a lesser known fact that using a powerful amateur telescope to do the same is also harmful. Huh … who knew? Good thing the manufacturers placed that key warning sticker on the Skyquest Dobsonian telescope.

There is a certain satisfaction and, dare I say, smugness which comes from that first bite of a piece of tasty fruit which you picked up from the grocer. Why Santa doesn’t fly in planes

When I was travelling within the USA this weekend, I had the opportunity to review the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Notice for Airline Passengers.
After reviewing the list of cautions and advice, and in particular the ultimate item, I understood why Santa Claus uses his own method of flight. Relying on commercial aviation within the US just wouldn’t work for St. Nick.

With all his wrapped presents for the world’s population of good boys and girls, then surely Father Christmas would run afoul of the FAA.

I was picking out a game to play at a recent family gathering when I saw a likely children’s game on a toy shelf:

What caught my eye was the following notice on the side of the game box:

And whilst I appreciate the thinking behind such guidance, I did think it was sort of funny that those who would most benefit from such a notice wouldn’t be able to read it.
Happy Christmas and more!
