Emergency Ration of Scotch
Posted 30 Mar 2008
One has to expect a certain amount of delay and inconvenience while traveling, but as I sat in the Pittsburgh airport for four hours this week…
and then boarded the plane…
then sat on the runway…
then went back to the terminal…
un-boarded…
waited…
re-boarded…
sat for a while…
and finally flew home about four hours late, I realized that all airplanes should carry an emergency ration of nice scotch.
Small glasses of scotch could be stored overhead, next to the emergency oxygen masks, and in case of stressful delays the flight crew could quickly deploy the “cautionary calming measures”. Alright, maybe getting irate passengers a little tipsy doesn’t sound like a good idea, but a nice glass of scotch or two for me would surely help make the time pass more quickly.
Only in America: what do they do with soda over there?

Over the Christmas holidays, I was in California visiting family around LA. Although from Chicago, I have lived in the UK for almost six years and only get back to the US once a year or so. Every time I go back, the US seems more and more distant to me. Not distant in a bad way – mostly just different from where I now live.
Anyway, I saw Stars & Stripes soda for sale in a grocery store:

As I was pondering the concept of patriotic liquid refreshment, I suddenly realised what was displayed immediately in front of the soda.

Commuting, Daily Life, Signs | 2 Comments
Frequently I see signs that give instructions which seem blatantly obvious and I wonder why the sign is necessary; I also wonder if the signs are ever actually read by someone who then follows the instructions, but who otherwise would not have. I give as an example the following picture:

In this picture, the prop of this plane has a sleeve around it. The sleeve is also strapped both to the side of the plane and to the underside the engine. This device is attached after the plane lands so that the propeller won’t accidentally spin, and can’t be moved by curious or mischievous passengers. Now, do you notice the red flag attached to the end of the strap that goes to the engine? Click “Read more” to see a closeup of that flag.
Just in time

Woke up this morning (as I typically do) and went to the concierge lounge in my hotel to get some breakfast (as I typically do when I am traveling for work).
For breakfast…
I got a bowl of cereal…using the last bowl in the stack.
I got a plate for bacon and toast…using the last plate in the stack.
I got a glass of orange juice…using the last glass on the tray.
I am sure this makes it appear that I was “That Guy” this morning, taking the last of everything, but rest assured that plates, cups, and bowls were all refilled before I even found my seat. Still, I thought it an auspicious start to the day. An indication that I will be just in time and have just enough of everything I need, but not too much. We’ll see how my day plays out and if that interpretation is valid.

On a walk this afternoon with the little boy when I saw this discarded banana peel on the side of the road. Like Conall’s Clementines, this banana skin made me think of chickenmonkeydog.
